Rail travel in and around Huddersfield


Huddersfield railway station is the second-busiest in West Yorkshire after Leeds.

The station was being used by around five million passenger journeys per year before the numbers were hit by the Covid pandemic, strikes, engineering diversions and cancellations. Periods of closure for the Transpennine Route Upgrade have hit passenger numbers again in the most recent usage estimates announced in December 2025 for the period from April 2024 to March 2025. There were an estimated 3,136,040 entries and exits at the station during that period. However, Huddersfield still maintains its position as the fifth-busiest station across all Yorkshire, behind Leeds, York, Sheffield and Doncaster.

Huddersfield is usually served by more than 200 trains a day. They offer direct services to and from more than 80 destinations throughout the north of England, with connecting services to many other places.

More than 100 stations can be reached from Huddersfield in under an hour.

Travel to London

Huddersfield has no direct train services to London, but has a huge number of options to reach London via connecting services. Best value is likely to be a big factor in choosing a route. These include:

• TPE to Leeds to change to LNER services to King's Cross
• TPE to York to change to LNER services to King's Cross
• TPE to Wakefield Kirkgate, then Northern to Wakefield Westgate, then LNER to King's Cross
• TPE to Mirfield or to Wakefield Kirkgate to take Grand Central to King's Cross
• Northern to Brighouse (currently replacement bus journey via Deighton), then Grand Central to King's Cross
• TPE to Manchester Piccadilly changing to Avanti West Coast to Euston
• Northern to Sheffield then East Midlands Railway to St Pancras

The fastest weekday journey as at the new December 2025 timetable is one taking 2 hours 31 minutes involving a 13-minute change from TransPennine Express to LNER at Leeds. This time is an exception rather than the rule as other journeys via Leeds typically take around 2 hours 52 minutes. The fastest journeys changing at York also now take around this time because of more trains operating non-stop from York to King's Cross.

Strangely a journey relying on two changes offers the fastest journeys through most if the day. Changing at Wakefield Kirkgate and Wakefield Westgate achieves a Huddersfield to London time of around 2 hours 41 minutes.

It is now possible to get to London in as little as 2 hours 48 minutes changing to one of the Grand Central trains at Brighouse, but the replacement bus on its meandering route via Deighton to Brighouse may not provide a particularly impressive start to such a journey at present and trains to Mirfield fail to provide reasonable connection times.

Changing to Avanti West Coast at Manchester Piccadilly can offer journeys in as little as 2 hours 51 minutes, but most journeys are closer to 3 hours 20 minutes. Travelling to change at Sheffield takes a long time to cover the first 30 miles and the journey time changing to East Midlands Railway there is typically around 3 hours 20 minutes.

More train disruption this weekend

Only buses will be running from Huddersfield on Saturday and Sunday with some services differing from previous station closure occasionsAfter four days of major disruption across the region after a fire in the Standedge Tunnel last weekend, Huddersfield station has a scheduled closure for the TransPennine Route Upgrade this weekend and next weekend

This time there are pre-planned bus replacements in all directions, including bus connection to TransPennine Express services at Brighouse; a replacement bus for the service to Mirfield and Wakefield Kirkgate; a replacement bus to Stalybridge; and a bus to Lockwood for services on the Penistone Line to Sheffield. This is a weekend only closure over the two weekends.

The replacement buses to Wakefield via Mirfield appear not to be scheduled this time to make additional stops at Dewsbury on their road journey through the town, so there will be no direct service between Huddersfield and Dewsbury.

Also there is no replacement bus service from Huddersfield to Manchester Airport on this occasion, meaning journeys there may take around 2 hours, instead of just over an hour, through a series of changes between bus and train and with routes also varying between Saturday and Sunday.

Some TransPennine Express services will be diverted via Brighouse and the longer Calder Valley route during the closure. Other services across the region will be curtailed requiring a change adding to the extra journey time.

From Monday to Friday next week (February 2-6) there will be major disruption of services at Sheffield during work on tracks. All journeys normally departing or arriving via the north end of the station will have bus replacements for all or part of the journey. Services from Huddersfield should be operating to Meadowhall for bus replacement into Sheffield.

Huddersfield line to Manchester
— includes TransPennine Express stopping trains to Slaithwaite, Marsden, Greenfield, Mossley, Stalybridge and Manchester Piccadilly. Also express trains to Manchester Victoria or via Victoria to Manchester Airport or to Liverpool. Some express trains call at Stalybridge. The Manchester Airport train operates around Manchester via Victoria, Oxford Road and Piccadilly stations. During engineering work, the Airport route is frequently subject to a schedule of curtailment at Manchester Victoria because of diversion delay along any part of its route. At these times there is usually a need to change in Manchester (most easily from the Manchester Piccadilly service) or take a bus replacement from Huddersfield to reach the airport.

Huddersfield line to Leeds
— includes TransPennine Express trains calling at Dewsbury or operating directly to Leeds and beyond. For hourly TransPennine Express trains calling at Mirfield see the York-bound trains on our Wakefield connection page. There are also normally Northern stopping trains serving seven stations (Deighton, Mirfield, Ravensthorpe, Dewsbury, Batley, Morley and Cottingley) between Huddersfield and Leeds. However, nearly all journeys to and from Huddersfield on this service are currently suspended until replacement platforms at Huddersfield station are completed as part of the TransPennine Route Upgrade. A diversionary service operates from Bradford, Low Moor, Halifax and Brighouse picking up the usual route towards Leeds at Mirfield. To reach these all-stop trains for places including Batley and Morley it is currently necessary to change from an express at either Mirfield or Dewsbury or a replacement bus via Deighton to Brighouse. There are a couple of services continuing to operate the usual stopping route from Leeds into Huddersfield mid-evening. During upgrade work on the line Deighton station is now long-term closed until 2027 and served by a bus replacement from Huddersfield and also usually a bus to Brighouse for travel towards Leeds. Ravensthorpe will have a similar long-term closure from December 14, 2025 with bus connection to Dewsbury.

Wakefield connection
— TransPennine Express hourly trains run every day to  Deighton *, Mirfield, Wakefield Kirkgate, Normanton, Castleford and York.
*Deighton station is long-term temporarily closed until 2027 and has a bus replacement service.


Bradford connection
— The usual route for hourly Northern trains is to Brighouse, Halifax, Low Moor and Bradford Interchange (continuing on Sundays via New Pudsey and Bramley to Leeds), however until the completion of replacement platforms as part of the TransPennine Route Upgrade at Huddersfield the train service is restricted to one early morning journey from Huddersfield each day and one Saturday late evening train from Bradford to Huddersfield. At other times it will be necessary to change to join the diverting train service starting from Leeds via Dewsbury and Mirfield before picking up this route at Brighouse towards Bradford (only to Halifax on Sundays). A 25-minute bus replacement journey is operating between Huddersfield and Brighouse or other alternatives might be to take a TransPennine Express train to connect with the diversion service running in the opposite direction at either Mirfield or Dewsbury. Some late evening journeys may involve bus replacement between Huddersfield and Halifax. Train journeys to Bradford might at times be more quickly achieved with a change at Leeds.

There are similar implications for those who normally use the above train to connect to the Monday to Saturday Calder Valley service at Brighouse.


Penistone line
— Northern trains to Lockwood, Berry Brow, Honley, Brockholes, Stocksmoor, Shepley, Denby Dale, Penistone and stations to Barnsley and Sheffield.
