Denby Dale
The village also lends its name to the civil parish covering several surrounding villages and hamlets and run as Denby Dale Parish Council, although its office is in the village of
The Denby Dale Viaduct spanning the valley of the River Dearne is the most distinctive feature of the village, which is famous for a succession of world-beating giant meat and potato pies.
The village's pie-making tradition has been continued since 1788. The dish from a pie made on September 5, 1964, can be found outside the Denby Dale Pie Hall, a village hall in Wakefield Road, built using the proceeds of a 6½ ton pie. The previous pie had celebrated the Queen's Coronation in 1953 and before that, in 1928, the people of Denby Dale rallied to the support of Huddersfield Royal Infirmary with a pie to support medical services at the hospital.
The biggest meat and potato pie to be paraded through Denby Dale was the 12 tonne Millennium Pie in 2000. Since then, in 2012, the famous pie made in 1887 for the Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee was recreated for the Channel 5 TV programme The Great Northern Cookbook. This time it was properly cooked, unlike the rancid original which had to be buried in the woods.
Denby Dale still shows it can cater for just about anything as it offers villagers, and those passing through, a slice of everything they might need as the shopping section below reveals.
The village's Anglican church, Holy Trinity, was built in the late 1930s, its foundation stone being laid in 1938. The church can be found at the end of Norman Road.
Denby Dale Industrial Estate is off Wakefield Road, near to the railway viaduct, and Hartcliffe Mills lay just beyond the viaduct from the village.
