The village is an old settlement thought to originally have had Danish origins and is mentioned in the Domesday Book as Denebi.

Just to the north east of Upper Denby on a road route down to Denby Dale is the smaller hamlet of Lower Denby.

The village is around 255 metres above sea level, nearly 100 metres higher than Denby Dale in the Dearne Valley below.
